About UIKA

The Uechi-Ryū International Karate Association, also known as “Uechi International” was created under the direct authority of our Chairman, Master Sensei Robert J. Campbell. It was started in 1980 under the name “Uechi Hong Kong” when Campbell Sensei was living and working in Asia. In 1989 Campbell Sensei made the decision to open membership in his association outside of Asia and he welcomed “The Traditional Uechi-Ryū Karate Institute” owned and operated by Sensei Jay Salhanick in Massachusetts.  Sensei Salhanick had been a long time student of Sensei Campbell and was an excellent choice to serve as the flagship dojo.  At that time Sensei Salhanick was teaching and operating a dojo in Boston and Medford Massachusetts  along with running the Uechi-Ryū Karate program at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

As time passed, Uechi International has welcomed many new members and member dojos. and has grown into one of the top-tier Uechi-Ryu associations in the world. Sensei Robert J. Campbell continues as Chairman of the association, along with Co-Chairman Sensei Jay Salhanick, Steve DiOrio as the current President, and Tim Ford Executive Vice President.
